In a dental office, simply hearing the words “root canal” can create anxiety for many patients. To those who have never received a root canal or simply don’t know much about the process, we wish to put your mind at ease in the event that you will need one in the future.

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental treatment used to repair and save a severely damaged or infected tooth. During this treatment, the damaged area of the tooth (pulp) and the nerves within are removed so that the infected area can be thoroughly cleaned.

How Do I Know if I Need a Root Canal?

Typically, the primary reasons a patient may require a root canal is from unexpected damage to a tooth or extended poor oral care. You may want to consider scheduling an appointment with one of our dentists for root canal therapy if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Extreme pain while chewing
  • Tooth pain disrupting your sleep
  • Lingering tooth sensitivity and pain from hot or cold food items
  • Darkened or discolored tooth
  • Swollen gums around the infected area

What is the Process of a Root Canal?

An opening is first made through the tooth’s crown in order to remove pulp and thoroughly clean the infected area. Your dentist may decide to complete the treatment in multiple visits depending on the severity of the damage or infection. In this case, a temporary filling is placed to protect the tooth. Another appointment is then scheduled to place a permanent filling and/or crown over the tooth.

How Affective is Root Canal Therapy?

A tooth that receives root canal therapy has a high rate of success in saving the tooth for the duration of a patient’s lifetime. In addition, the placement of a crown or filling to complete the treatment makes it almost impossible for others to notice that you even had a root canal performed.
